Playing Big Pots
Playing big pots might be very good or very bad strategy. Obviously, it is a good strategy if you win it and a bad strategy if you lose it.
When Playing Big Pots Goes Bad
As you play big pots, the bet is usually big, particularly in the case of no-limit and pot-limit Texas Hold’em. In the first, you might go all-in, while in the second you can bet as much as the size of the pot.
For instance, if you are looking to play a $1,000 pot and you would like to win before the turn, you have to bet forcefully pre-turn. For a great impact, you might bet the pot and scare off your opponents as fast as you can. If it works you will win an extra $1,000. If it fails to work instantly, there are high chances you will be left with a slight competition for the big pot.
This is the point when things get tough. When you made a big pet with on or two remaining players, you will start wondering about the chances of one of them having a superior hand than yours. Sadly, as you already made a big bet, you can only call or keep on with your aggressive play and raise, meaning that one of your lasting players has flopped or is drawing a good card, you are in a thousands of dollars trouble.
When to Play Big Pots
The lesson is simple: when looking to win big pots, keep in mind the below aspects prior of starting to play the plot.
- the strength of your and the other players hands;
- poker position.
This is the best possible strategy: play a big pot only with a big hand, and thus, keep raising and re-raising convinced that the chances are on your side.
Nevertheless, it is obvious that you can’t always play this strategy as the other players will figure you out rather soon. That is why, you need to look beyond the cards you have. In a late position in particular, you might escape playing big pots with less than the strongest hands. You still need to watch out for the remaining players with position on you following the plot. In case they call or continue to bet even after you made a considerable raise, be ready to lose the big pot and consequently big bet you made.
