Playing As Underdog

In poker, the general guideline is you win when you have the best cards at the table or if you are good enough to determine the other players believe that you have the best possible cards. So, does it really make sense to play a game and act as if you are the poker underdog? Trust me, it does.

Why Play the Underdog?

Merely the look in the other players faces when they see your great hand at the showdown should be sufficient reward. Just think about the fun you would have determining your opponents believe you have an average hand, when, in reality you have an excellent hand.

Naturally, there are more realistic reasons to play the underdog in a poker hand. With a monster hand, you should delude your opponents about the real strength of your cards as the last thing you want is for them to quit too early from the game. Actually, you want them all to be on the hand at the showdown. Keep in mind, the more players remaining at the showdown, the bigger the pot, and thus the money you win.
Hence, playing the underdog is something you have to master in order to be a skilled poker player. However, keep in mind, not to abuse this strategy. Do not always play the underdog, you have monster cards, or else, you will be easily read by your opponents and the strategy will not work anymore.

Strategy for Playing the Underdog

When playing the underdog, you have to slow-play your hand. Basically, it means you should check when you can and call all bets made for you to stay in the game, but stating out from forceful play as long as possible. In fact, acting as the underdog, you should not raise at all. Generally, the player who raises is believed to have very good cards (or is just bluffing to make the opponents believe he has very good cards). You definitely don’t want people believe you have an excellent hand because you will no longer believed to be the underdog of the hand.

Obviously, in some cases raising is the proper underdog strategy as it will help mount up the size of the pot. However, you should use it moderately, and only when you are sure that the other players will consider that you are just bluffing.
